Veneers have empowered countless people to achieve their ideal smiles by concealing troublesome dental defects such as chips, cracks, gaps, and stains. While these devices are a long-lasting solution, they are not permanent and will eventually need to be replaced. Here’s a brief overview of how long you can expect your veneers to last as well as a few tips for keeping them beautiful and functional.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin ceramic shells that are cemented to flawed teeth to give them a more visually pleasing appearance. These devices are designed to mimic the ideal appearance of natural tooth structure, so it is quite unlikely that anyone will be able to tell that you received the treatment after they are placed.

Veneers usually require two appointments to be applied. During the first, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort before removing a small amount of enamel from the teeth being treated to make room. Then, you will receive a temporary set of veneers to wear while your permanent set is being crafted.

About two weeks later, you’ll come back to the office to have your temporary appliances removed and your customized permanent veneers cemented in place. After any final adjustments, you’ll be ready to show off your new grin.

How Long Can Veneers Last?

Veneers are not invincible and will eventually need to be replaced, but these appliances can last for fifteen years or more if they receive excellent care. A few excellent ways to keep your transformed smile in great shape include:

  • Brushing and flossing every day while taking special care to clean around the bases of the veneers.
  • Using antibacterial mouthwash regularly to control populations of harmful oral bacteria.
  • Seeing your dentist twice a year for routine exams and cleanings.
  • Abstaining from bad habits like smoking, chewing on ice or writing utensils, and using your teeth to open packages.

Veneers are an investment in your appearance and confidence that is worth protecting. Consulting with your dentist can help you find the best ways to preserve the results of your cosmetic dental treatment.
