If you have ever ventured into the world of natural medicine, you know that essential oils are a popular remedy for a wide range of ailments. Many people even use them as a way to relieve the pain of TMJ disorder (TMD). But do they really work, or are they a waste of your precious time and money? This blog post aims to help you have a balanced point of view.

Which Essential Oils Can Help with TMJ Pain?

Some people have found that the following essential oils can be effective for reducing TMJ pain:

  • Lavendar. This oil is known for promoting calmness and relaxation. It might help to reduce stress-related teeth grinding, which in turn may help to relieve TMD symptoms.
  • Chamomile. Chamomile is also known for encouraging a calm state of mind. It even has some impressive anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Rosemary. This has been used as a remedy for musculoskeletal pain for generations.
  • Eucalyptus. This oil may be able to block the nerve signals that cause TMJ pain.

Downsides of Using Essential Oils

Essential oils might be worth a try if you are struggling with jaw pain and other TMD symptoms. However, there are some significant caveats that you should keep in mind:

  • Essential oils do not address the main cause of TMD. TMD is usually the result of anatomical abnormalities or damage to the orofacial structures. Therefore, essential oils can provide temporary relief at best.
  • Essential oils are not strictly regulated. It is not always easy to find pure, high-quality products. You may have to research various brands before finding one that is reliable.
  • Irritation and allergies may occur. Some people have allergic reactions to essential oils, whereas others find that the oils irritate their skin when they try topical application.

Finding Lasting Relief from TMJ Pain

If you decide to try essential oils, they should not be the primary way in which you treat your TMJ disorder. Rather, they may be a helpful supplement to professional TMD therapies. For example, you might benefit from a special orthotic splint, which could help to relax your facial muscles and gently reposition your jaw. Or, you might need braces to correct a misaligned bite. A skilled dental professional can help you understand why you are experiencing pain and help you find truly long-lasting relief!

There is nothing wrong with using essential oils, but you should have reasonable expectations and never use them to replace treatment from a qualified TMJ/TMD expert.
