What’s the Big Deal? Drinking Coffee with Invisalign Aligners

As you groggily walk into your favorite coffee shop, you look forward to taking that first, satisfying sip. When your order is up, you remember that your dentist told you to take out your Invisalign aligners first. You have an important choice—leave them in or remove them. If you struggle with this, then you might not fully understand why you need to follow your dentist’s instructions. Keep reading to get the inside scoop about drinking coffee with Invisalign.

Why You Shouldn’t Drink Coffee with Your Aligners In

Every step of your Invisalign treatment is meticulously planned with precision, but drinking coffee (or any beverage other than water) could derail your progress. Specifically, the content below details why you should take the time to remove your aligners prior to having a cup of Joe.

Reason #1: Coffee Is Hot.

The clear plastic material that the aligners are made of may seem durable, but it is not designed to withstand extreme temperatures. If you drink hot coffee with aligners in your mouth, it could cause them to warp, which will at minimum interfere with your treatment plan.

Reason #2: Coffee Can Discolor Your Aligners.

When you decided to straighten your teeth with Invisalign, did your appearance play a role in that decision? If you are like many patients, you might have chosen clear aligners because you didn’t want everyone to know about your treatment. However, brown coffee can stain the clear aligners, calling the wrong kind of attention to your smile.

Reason #3: Removing Aligners Isn’t Hard and Doesn’t Take Long.

Although it may take a little practice at first, Invisalign aligners can be removed easily and then put back in just as easily. It takes just a few seconds, but this small step can protect your aligners and help you get closer to your goal with fewer complications.

Drinking Other Beverages  with Aligners In

During your Invisalign treatment, other beverages such as soda, wine, and juice may seem harmless if you drink it with your aligners in; however, even white wine and clear soda can taint the clear plastic. It’s not worth putting your appearance at risk.

As you can see, your dentist has good reasons for instructing you to remove your aligners before you drink coffee and anything else besides water. So, although you’re tired and desperate for your coffee in the morning, take your aligners out so that you can keep working toward your straight smile.
