There’s nothing worse than hurting and not knowing why. If you’re feeling significant facial pain, you probably want to fix it as quickly as possible. That can be hard to do if you aren’t completely sure what you’re dealing with.
The first thing you should do in the case of any dental emergency is to call your dentist, and they might be able to give you some idea of what the problem might be. But if you want a little bit more information on top of that, here are some of the most common causes of facial pain.
Abscesses
These are painful, pus-filled bumps that result from severe infection or gum disease. Abscesses are not only painful in themselves, but can also generate discomfort in the mouth and face in the area around them. You might also have a fever or foul taste in the mouth along with that.
TMJ Disorder
The temporomandibular joints, or TMJ, are the two joints that connect the jaw to the face. Trauma, chronic tooth grinding, or a misaligned bite can lead these joints to come out of alignment, causing what’s known as a TMJ disorder. This will cause pain in the jaw, headaches, swelling, and even vertigo due to these joints’ close proximity to the inner ears.
Sinus Infection
Your sinuses run all over your face, so pain that feels like it’s coming from your mouth may actually be due to swelling in the sinuses. If you’re having unexplained discomfort along with a runny nose, fever, cough, or other flu-like symptoms, this might be what you’re dealing with.
Migraines
In a similar vein, migraines might feel like they’re coming from your mouth or face, when in reality they’re coming from the head. If your pain is accompanied by light or noise sensitivity, dizziness, chills, and nausea, you might be having a migraine. These can occur for a lot of reasons, so you should talk to a doctor if you find that you’re having them often.
As you can see, there are quite a few things that can cause facial pain. It’s a good thing that dentists are experts who are capable of dealing with them proficiently.
