I have mouth swelling and pain that disturbs my sleep. What do I do?

Intense pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. If you experience pain that disturbs your sleep, please call our office immediately to schedule an appointment. We will comprehensively evaluate your oral health to determine the cause of pain, and then we’ll recommend the best method for alleviating your discomfort and restoring your optimal dental health.

I have difficulty opening my mouth, and sometimes my jaw sticks. I also have frequent headaches and earaches. Could these be symptoms of a dental problem?

All of these can be symptoms of temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ).  Patients may experience one or more of these symptoms.  They symptoms may develop due to a poor bite or trauma to the jaw.  Untreated, these symptoms can become severe.  After a consultation and exam, we will administer specific testing of your joints and muscles that guide the jaws to determine where your jaws should be positioned to relieve the stress on the muscles and joints, and ultimately, to relieve your painful symptoms.  You may benefit from an orthotic (a removable, clear acrylic appliance).

Why do my gums bleed when I floss and brush?

This is an indication of gum (periodontal) disease.  Periodontal disease destroys the bones that support your teeth.  The bacteria associated with gum disease can affect your overall health and has been shown to contribute to coronary (heart) disease, premature births, strokes, and instability of blood sugar levels in diabetics. We can evaluate the health of your gums and recommend treatment.

Why are my teeth are sensitive to temperature extremes?

Much dental sensitivity can come from use of toothpastes that are abrasive, especially tartar control and whitening toothpastes.  Also, acidic foods or liquids, such as carbonated beverages (soft drinks), break down the enamel of the teeth and cause hypersensitivity.  After a comprehensive evaluation, we can recommend simple treatments to relieve the sensitivity.
