Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Questions Dr. Michel Often Receives

What do I do if my temporary crown falls off?

If your temporary crown comes off when our office is not open, you can purchase Temp-Bond cement, an over-the-counter bonding agent to hold your crown in place until you can make an appointment.

My teeth feel sensitive after my procedure. Is something wrong?

Postoperative sensitivity for new fillings and crowns is normal and will decrease over a few weeks. If sensitivity increases, call our office for an appointment.

I have mouth swelling and pain that disturbs my sleep. What do I do?

Intense pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. If you experience pain that disturbs your sleep, please call our Topeka dental office immediately to schedule an appointment. We will comprehensively evaluate your oral health to determine the cause of your pain, then recommend treatments to alleviate discomfort and restore optimal dental health.

I have difficulty opening my mouth, and sometimes my jaw sticks. I also have frequent headaches and earaches. Could these be symptoms of a dental problem?

All of these can be symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Patients may experience one or more of these symptoms, which may develop due to a misaligned bite or trauma to the jaw. Untreated, these symptoms, and others, can become severe. After a consultation and exam, we'll test your jaw joints and muscles to determine optimal alignment, then prescribe non-surgical treatment to relieve discomfort and restore healthy function. You may benefit from a custom-fitted orthotic, which is a removable, clear acrylic appliance worn at night.

My gums bleed after I brush. Is this something to be concerned about?

Bleeding is usually a sign of a problem. When gums bleed, the cause usually stems from the patient brushing too hard or from early-stage gum disease, called gingivitis. We can consult with you on the proper toothbrush and pressure for safe, effective daily oral care. If your gums show signs of gum disease, we may recommend a deep hygiene treatment to alleviate your symptoms and renew periodontal health. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss for American adults and has been linked to many overall health conditions, including stroke, heart attack, respiratory problems, diabetes complications, and dementia. Untreated, gum disease can escalate to significantly damage your health, so call for an assessment now. We'll help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for life!

Why are my teeth sensitive to temperature extremes?

Many cases of dental sensitivity result from abrasive toothpastes, especially tartar control and teeth whitening formulas. Also, acidic foods and liquids, such as carbonated beverages, erode tooth enamel and cause hypersensitivity. After a comprehensive evaluation, we can recommend simple treatments to relieve sensitivity.
